04 Jan Love Storm
Confession: I have a reoccurring nightmare of being swallowed whole in a tidal wave. Have you ever seen one of those end of the world type movies where there’s a tidal wave at least 100ft high and absolutely no way of escaping? A movie that came to my mind is The Perfect Storm with George Clooney. In this movie Clooney and his whole crew are submerged by a massive ocean wave and are never seen again. Yep, right there is what my nightmares are made of. These dreams wake me up in a cold sweat holding onto my blankets for dear life.
Recently I was thinking about the topic of love, specifically God’s love toward us, and this reoccurring dream was stirred up inside of me- seems odd but I love how God tied it together. In Romans 8:35 Paul challenges us with the thought “Can anything separate us from God’s love?” And in Ephesians 3:18 Paul prays that we would understand how wide, how long, how high and how deep God’s love is.
Between these two scriptures and my reoccurring nightmare (ha!) a beautiful scene was painted in my heart. One of me, of you, in a vast sea of his never ending love. A raging sea that there is no possible escape from. Where the tidal waves of his love are surging and crashing all around us, unrelenting. I see us swallowed up by the highest, widest, most deepest waters of his love.
The realization sets in that no matter what terrible things we’ve thought, no matter what bad choices we’ve made, no matter how we’ve sinned or screwed things up there is no getting away from this pursuing love. Just like George Clooney and his crew could not escape the raging sea no matter what they did, neither can we escape his raging storms of love. Yet many days, for some of us every single day, we allow our thoughts to convince us otherwise. How could His love STILL be extended towards me after all of the ways I’ve fallen short? But I promise you it does, and forever and ever it will be.
My prayer for you today is what Paul prayed in Ephesians 3:18, that you would be able to comprehend even just a glimpse of his raging love towards you. That this would become settled in your heart, an unshakable truth you vow to live by. Forever confident and never second guessing His love toward you.
“And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.” Ephesians 3:18
